What to drink? Should I juice? Detox made less scary & with less sugar!

Need a guide to ditching the sugar cravings and some recipes to go with your new sugar free habits? I have some great downloadable information just for you! HERE!

Detox is not as scary as you think!

You know how nice it feels to drive your car home after getting a tune up? The oil is squeaky clean, the fluids have been topped off, windshield wipers have been changed, tire pressure is at that perfect level, and it’s been washed inside and out? Well, just like our cars need a tune up, a seasonal detox allows our bodies to become shiny and new again too.  It allows our body to reboot our metabolism, boost our immunity, clears the cobwebs from our minds, gives our skin a chance to glow, and allows us to lose weight effortlessly.

Are you afraid that it will be too hard or that maybe you aren’t worth it? I know for a fact that you ARE worth it, because I know deep down you are just like me. You want to be happy. You want to feel energetic, vibrant, and full of joy. Do you remember what that feels like? You can be confident in the fact that you are worth it. You are enough! AND, I will be with you every step of the way supporting you, answering your questions, and cheering you on, because I know you can do this.

Maybe a little fear comes up for you at the thought of not being able to eat your favorite foods?

Are you concerned about giving up your daily coffee, chocolate, or evening cocktails perhaps?

Are you afraid I’m going to make you drink juice and smoothies all day?

Maybe you think that you will feel hungry or deprived. No worries, my friend, because I’ve created this detox so you can pick which level of detox adventure you want to go on.

Having all these feelings are natural, but you know what is not natural?  Feeling like we have to constantly count calories, not eat any fat, and go around in circles from one diet to the next. The thought of doing that for the rest of my life sounds just plain exhausting!

There is no reason to be scared because you will NOT feel deprived. We are going to keep it simple and eat wholesome, nourishing foods. The only thing you have to lose is some unwanted poundage, dark circles and puffiness under your eyes, and that feeling of lethargy that has been dragging you down. You will discover your blueprint for the foods that work for your unique body.

I have everything you will need: a step-by-step guide, the recipes, a shopping list and meal planner, as well as a transition recipe packet & food diary. I will be with you every step of the way with daily e-mail support and to cheer you on.

Not ready for a detox?

Why you should start juicing now!

Did you know that when you make juice from raw vegetables, your body absorbs the nutrients within 15 seconds? Talk about an energy shot! No need to buy those sugary and chemical-ish concoctions from your local drug-store or mini mart. Juicing is an all-natural way to boost your energy and feel amazing. When you juice your fruits and veggies, you end up extracting all the water and nutrients from them and leave behind only the plant fibers. By separating the fruit or vegetable from its fiber, we gain access to all of the amazing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients which are much more easily assimilated by our body than if we were to eat them.

This allows your body to absorb the nutrients more quickly, without having to digest the dense bulk of the plant. You can also fit an amazing amount of veggies into a single glass of juice, making it a great way to use up those extra veggies from your garden or CSA share. PLUS, you will end up with a glass of deliciousness that packs a powerful nutritional punch. Although some would also say that the cost of stocking enough fresh organic vegetables to make daily juices can be somewhat expensive, my feeling is that if you stop buying all of the pre-packaged foods/snacks you were buying, you will end up saving money in the long run on your food AND your doctor bills.

One more thing before I go: while you can control the quality of ingredients when you are making fresh juice at home, always read your labels when it comes to buying store-bought juice. These juices can be high in sugar and have a high glycemic load, which may cause blood sugar imbalances. There are many store bought juices that are great alternatives to making your own!! Save time with them, but be sure to read the labels!

What to look for in store bought juice.........

Rather than filling up your shopping cart with the necessary ingredients to make at-home juices, why not just grab a few store-bought juices instead? Read on to see which brands are the best to help you get back on track after indulging a little too much:

1. Naked

Dedicated to good health and sustainability, Naked products are packed with everything you need to live a healthy life. With no added sugars or preservatives, their juices are yummy and delicious naturally. Some of their smoothies are even created with added boosts to help you push through a busy day or workout.

Greens are one of the most under-consumed foods in the average person’s diet, so Brittany, the Director of Digital Marketing and Partnerships here at LR, suggests trying the Green Machine juice smoothie. Drink up!

2. Blue Print

If you’re looking for a juice cleanse that’s the real deal, then Blue Print Cleanse is the way to go. Every bottle is packed with raw, organic fruit and vegetable juices. And if you’re looking to get serious, Blue Print offers different levels of intensity for cleansing for beginners or experts. If you’re a Starbucks regular, you’ve probably spotted a few Evolution Fresh products around. From fruits and veggies to essential nourishment, you’ll find all your favorites products that are bursting with flavor and nutrition. So instead of sticking with your everyday order of coffee and a croissant, try one of Evolution Fresh’s to keep you feeling alive throughout the day.

4. Odwalla

Known for their yummy smoothies, Odwalla now has a selection of smoothies too! Whether you need some protein or a thirst quencher, their products are filled with goodness for your body. Odwalla even has chocolate products. Need we say more?

5. Bolthouse Farms Juice

A favorite here at LR, Bolthouse juice has a variety of products to help you on your fitness journey. They even have designated breakfast and cafe drinks for you to enjoy. We’re loving their new Daily Greens juice that is packed with vitamins A, C, B6, and B12 to help you recover fast. You can even put it in place of your salad, it’s so good!

**Labels like "juice drink" and "juice cocktail" are almost always a sneaky way of saying for brightly-colored sugar water. For a truly healthy drink, look for 100-percent juice, like orange juice, cranberry juice, or aloe vera juice. Nothing else.

Not ready to start juicing? Let me say a few words about all the unhealthy beverages we are consuming in this country! Stores are filled with drink choices! Why? It's a to go item that sells, gives people something to do while driving, exercising or out running around. How many times I have stopped for coffee on my way out to run errands! These are the first thing I have clients get rid of and make the transition to healthier choices!

How about those fancy coffee drinks?

When blended with 2-percent milk and sugar, a large icy cup of Joe can contain up to 800 calories and 1/3 of the maximum recommended intake for artery-clogging saturated fat. And there's a reason why it tastes so sweet: At 45 grams of sugar in a typical drink, you get more of a sugar shock than a caffeine buzz. Top it off with whipped cream and say hello to a waistline-wrecking treat.

Flavored and infused waters may deliver a few extra vitamins—along with added sugars. Next time you buy a bottle of water, check the label: If you see anything more than water and natural flavors, leave it on the shelf.

Diet soda may have zero calories, but it also has zero nutrition. Plus, if you're guzzling diet coke all day, there's a good chance you're not drinking the healthy drinks your body needs, particularly water and tea. One diet soda a day is fine, but if you're downing five or six cans, you may be doing damage to your body.

When it comes to happy hour calorie traps, the mixers are the real culprits. Case in point: According to the USDA, a 16-ounce pina colada can clock in at a whopping 880 calories—that's more than eight times the amount in a shot of rum.

I say all the time that fruit on its own is good for you, but a 32-ounce smoothie can pack as many as 700 calories with fewer than two grams of protein, thanks to the high sugar content. That's like eating a whole pineapple, entire mango, and one cup each of blueberries and strawberries in a single sitting. Why is that bad? Calories from any food get stored away in your fat cells if you eat more than you can burn.

Ending your workout by guzzling a typical sport drink may set your weight-loss goals back. Many sports drinks on the market contain a mixture of natural and artificial sweeteners, plus a laundry list unpronounceable additives. If replenishing electrolytes is your goal, switch to zero-calorie Smartwater!

Alcohol in moderation—one or two drinks a day—has been shown to raise HDL (good) cholesterol, boost bloodflow, and improve sugar metabolism. But when you ask for that third drink, your risk for obesity and slew of other health problems starts to climb. A March 2011 study from the American Cancer Society found that the risk of cancer death was 36 percent higher among people who drank heavily (three or more drinks each day) than those who drank in moderation or not at all.

Most store bought juices are made from the same sweeteners used in soda, combined with preservatives and artificial color. At 100 calories per cup, and with the equivalent of six teaspoons of sugar and zero nutrients, you're essentially drinking liquid candy. Definitely not refreshing.

How about zero calorie energy drinks? When people think about "energy" drinks, they're usually referring to products that contain caffeine. The problem is that most "energy drinks" are loaded with too much caffeine and sugar, so while they may give you a short-term burst of energy, you'll ultimately crash and just want to pass out. When you need a brain boost, you're better off sipping green tea or snacking on a handful of walnuts.

Let's get real about food, drinks and all the sugar going into our bodies on a daily basis! Take one day and read every label and make a note of the amount of sugar in a typical day for you, or better yet for your children! Especially if behavior is an issue!
