What Participants are Saying

“The group offered me an opportunity to be in the moment, and feel completely supported by others around me.  It was so helpful to be in a supportive community where I could share anything I wanted to share – good or bad, and others do the same.  I was reminded that we’re all human. Simple exercises we did, honest conversations we had, and the faith we had in each other was an incredible source of inspiration during this time in my life.”

– Anna Grundstrom, Brooklyn, NY

“Through this group I developed an immediate bond with likeminded individuals.  With every session our connection deepened and grew together in our own way. We learned various simple and fun ways to manage anxiety and stress and achieved a greater sense of self-awareness and acceptance.  It was a life changing experience!”

– Jean Poling, East Rutherford, NJ

Thank You Suzanne

~Walter Martin ESQ.

There are skills that people can learn and use that will shift them to a higher and sustainable level of well-being and help them to flourish throughout their lifetime. Sonja Lyubormirsky has shown in her research that our happiness level is affected by our genetics which is 50%, our environment or life circumstances which makes up 10% and the other 40% we control. We have a choice as to how we use that 40% to increase our sense of well-being.

We all come across situations in which we get stuck in life, work, relationships and self-care. I would like to work with you to look at these times and find a new way of handling them to get unstuck. We can take what is working and build on it rather than focusing on what isn’t working. Reinterpret, redirect, reframe into a more optimistic, fulfilling direction in life. We can look at the bigger picture and see what steps can be taken to create the life you really want. According to Rick Hansen, neuropsychologist and author of Hardwiring Happiness, our brains are wired to scout for all that’s negative, like Velcro; however, we are surrounded by opportunities every day to change this. I can help you discover the tools that can bring more happiness into your life. Conventional thinking is that success will lead to happiness, but research has shown the opposite to be true, happiness leads to success. By cultivating a positive mindset you can boost well-being, productivity, creativity, relationships and flourish in your life.

This is your Life What do you choose? Choose consciously, wisely, thoughtfully. I can guide you in making the right choices for you and your unique life. ~ Suzanne

A letter to you my future client.............

I believe all great coaches use Positive Psychology, it doesn't mean they call themselves Positive Psychology practitioners. We work to form trusting relationships, we build a close rapport and we are driven to help clients move forward to achieve a set of purposeful and meaningful goals. We love using our clients strengths in each session, making them energized by our work together and experiencing a sense of accomplishment when they succeed.

As Robert Fulghum argued, everything we need to know we learned in kindergarten (share everything, play fair…be aware of wonder). I am going to show you how everything you need to know about coaching (well, almost everything), you can learn from Positive Psychology. I will introduce you to the field of Positive Psychology and the theories and assortment of practices I use to fuel client momentum and drive success.  We are going to “learn some and think some…and play and workeveryday some” (Fulghum).

How I work:

A typical session starts with.....What are three good things that happened in the past 24 hours? What went well? They can be as big as winning a gold medal or as small as getting to a meeting on time. Take 30 seconds to write them down.  I’ll wait.

I do this activity at the start of every coaching session, class and most conversations too!  This simple activity is at the heart of Positive Psychology: a shift in focus to “what’s working,” and how do we do more of it? instead of “what’s wrong,” and how do we fix it?

While psychology “as usual” concentrates on how to help people get from -5 to 0, Positive Psychology focuses on how to help people flourish and move from 0 to +5. This method also explores what helps the “plus fivers” thrive.  Why are happy people happy? What factors contribute to healthy relationships? What are the characteristics of successful teams? How do motivated people stay motivated? You get the point. Positive Psychology provides coaches with the tools for us to help healthy, creative, resourceful people change for the better, and offers us a smorgasbord of research-based activities to keep our clients engaged in the process.

Oh, and by the way, the results of the study that had people write down three good things at the end of each day for just one week (conducted by Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology; Chris Peterson, the great uncle of the movement, and Nansoon Park, a distant cousin), found that participants experienced an increase in happiness and a decrease in depressive symptoms for six months. Six months!! Pretty amazing. Try it and see what you think.

Tool #1 : for those who are really ready to play and work every day!

  1. At the end of the day, write down three good things that happened. Big or small, deep or superficial. Whatever comes to mind. Keep it simple and list only three. Take 60 seconds to replay one good thing, savor it, and ponder why it works.

  2. At the start each session, have your client talk about three good things that happened in the last day, or since the previous session. Keep a log of the items and read them at the end of the week.

  3. Find your Strength and  take the VIA Character Survey at viame.org, and start thinking about your strengths. Good luck!
